Car sales down so far this year

REGISTRATIONS of new passenger cars in Slovakia barely changed month-on-month in June, but year-on-year comparisons show a drop in car sales thus far in 2013.

Since the beginning of 2013, there were 34,475 cars registered in categories M1 and N1, a year-on-year drop of 6.23 percent, the SITA newswire quoted the figures presented by the Association of Automotive Industry on July 15.

In June, 5,872 M1 category cars (passenger vehicles with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver seat) were registered, as well as 526 N1 cars (vehicles carrying goods with a maximum mass of 3.5 tonnes or less).

Automaker Škoda tops the Slovak market, accounting for a 19 percent share overall, followed by Volkswagen with slightly over 8 percent and Hyundai with 7.9 percent. Kia and Peugeot, some models of which are produced in Slovakia, followed with 6.97 percent and 6.79 percent respectively.

Customers showed an increased interest in hybrid cars in the first half of 2013, as 81 percent more were registered as compared to the same period in 2012. At this time last year, 27 hybrid cars were registered in Slovakia as compared with 49 thus far this year, SITA wrote.
