AS MANY AS 10 percent of the new cars sold thanks to the Slovak government’s car-scrapping scheme earlier this year were made in Slovakia.
The biggest interest was in the Kia Cee’d, which is made in Žilina, and the Peugeot 207, which is made in Trnava, the SITA newswire reported.
The government allocated €55.3 million for the first and second rounds of the car-scrapping scheme. As a result, 44,200 vehicles were scrapped, representing 17 percent of all cars older than 10 years in Slovakia.
The Renault Thalia and Škoda Fabia were the best-selling new cars bought using the car-scrapping bonus, SITA wrote.
The Economy Ministry dismissed suggestions of a third round of car-scrapping bonuses, calling it unnecessary since several automobile dealers have continued offering bonuses at their own expense.
