A RECENTLY completed three-year project looking at chemical logistics in central Europe, ChemLog, has presented the potential of Slovakia to interconnect the combined transport networks of the EU, Ukraine and Russia. It showed that trains using combined transport could go via Slovakia as far as China, the Revue Priemyslu industrial monthly wrote in March.
The Slovak participant in the ChemLog project was Slovakia’s Association of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry; the project was financed from EU funds.
A first continental combined transport line from Dunajská Streda to Duisburg in Germany is already running, and a connection from the Czech Republic to eastern Slovakia is under preparation. However, the potential is much bigger via private as well as planned public terminals.
“Within Europe there is a network of regular express trains of combined transport, which ends west of Slovakia,” project coordinator Jaroslav Čermák told the monthly. “Our goal is to prepare and introduce a regular connection between Slovakia with the European network. We presented Slovakia as an alternative east-west route, especially for partners in the German chemical industry, as well as part of the European transport network.”
The main objective of the project is to find more economical, ecological and safer transport routes for chemical products.
