The Chinese online seller Temu is conquering Slovakia.
Temu launched a massive online campaign in Central and Eastern Europe last autumn and has been growing popular since then, writes the Hospodárske Noviny daily. According to data from the cashback website Tipli.sk, more than 4,000 orders have come from Slovakia since October 2023. The website’s market share is around 1 to 2 percent within the e-commerce sector.
“We can therefore estimate the total number of purchases on Temu in Slovakia in the range of 200,000 to 400,000 over the last four months,” said Jiří Jirásek from Tipli.sk.
On Facebook, the Temu SK/CZ group has more than 7,400 members. It was created about six months ago.
Temu, which was founded in 2022, operates in the same way as Aliexpress and Wish. It offers a wide range of products from different sellers for low prices.
As the daily points out, security experts from Grizzly Research have warned customers of threats linked to the app of the online shop. For example, it required access to audio recording and online conversations. In addition, the app was supposed to contain malicious code.
Although no problems were reported in Slovakia, posts in the Facebook group suggest that Temu customers are aware of security threats and use one-off credit cards or delete their card details from their profile.
In the US, Temu is suspected of supporting slave and child labour.
Based in Boston, the retailer is owned by Chinese tech giant PDD Holdings.
