A DUTCH producer of confectionery, LEAF International, has announced plans to enlarge its plant in Levice, southern Slovakia, and move production there from Denmark. New technology that was previously used in Denmark will be installed in Levice, the TASR newswire reported.
The new production line should start test production as of January 2011, and full production is expected to begin on April 1, 2011. The investment should create more than 50 jobs in the region. LEAF Slovakia’s director Martin Danielič said that production in Levice will rise by 1,500 tons, TASR wrote. The products will be exported to Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany.
“We don’t sell [our products] in Slovakia for two reasons,” Danielič said, as quoted by TASR. “Firstly due to finances: we wouldn’t be able to compete on price. The second reason is that the Slovak market is not ready for our products.”
The confectionery for Nordic markets includes salmiac (ammonium chloride) as an ingredient, which makes the products taste slightly salty. The best-known among its products is salty liquorice, popular in Nordic countries.
