Danish firm breaks ground for new plant

DANISH company Unomedical started building a new manufacturing plant on August 25 in Michalovce, a town in Eastern Slovakia's Košice region. Unomedical produces disposable sterile medical materials and instruments.

The plant will cover an area of 81,000 square meters. Three buildings including two sterile halls are expected to be completed by March of 2006, according to the TASR news agency.

Unomedical hopes to create 500 new jobs. Employees will have to go through intensive training as managers, specialists, technicians and operators. Some of the training will take place in Denmark.

"Among the reasons Unomedical chose Slovakia is its favourable business environment and the quality of the labour force and local suppliers," said company president Henrik Brandt.

The company's total annual turnover reaches €250 million. It will invest some €8.8 million (Sk341.9 million) in Slovakia.
