Economic freedom in Slovakia has worsened slightly. The country ranked 65th of 180 countries surveyed in the latest Index of Economic Freedom (IEF), published by The Heritage Foundation. It scored 65 points, which is 0.3 points less than last year.
The country struggles with regulatory efficiency and the rule of law.
"The Slovak Republic is still affected by widespread corruption and a judicial system that remains weak, inefficient, and vulnerable to political interference," reads the IEF.
Within Europe, Slovakia came 32nd out of 44 countries. All of Slovakia's neighbouring countries placed higher in the ranking.
In addition, economic freedom dropped globally in 2019, earning an overall score of 60.8.
The most economically free countries are Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand. By contrast, North Korea is the least economically free country.
