Energy exports up

SLOVAKIA last year exported 38 per cent more electricity than it did in 2000, sending 3.7 terawatt hours largely to Hungary, Croatia and Rumania.

The country produced over 32 terawatts of electricity last year, of which the electricity utility Slovenské elektrárne (SE) generated 85 per cent.

Gross domestic electricity consumption rose by 0.4 per cent year-on-year, totalling over 28.3 terawatts.

The heavily indebted SE was originally planned to be privatised under the current government, but delays in the sale process mean it will be up to a government formed after September 2002 elections to dispose of the utility.
