According to an energy study performed by the Economy Ministry, overall energy consumption in Slovakia dropped by 15.5% from 1991 to 1997, while in individual branches of industry energy use fell from 10 to 55%.
This development was caused by the liquidation of outdated production facilities and the introduction of more efficiemttechnology, declining industrial output, and an overall drop in the country's gross domestic product. Results for 1998 have not been published yet. In 1997, industrial and construction companies consumed 46.8% of all energy used in Slovakia; households took 18.5%, services and the retail sector 15.1% and transport 9.1%.
