THOSE environmentally-friendly residents of Slovakia who are composting organic household wastes can now enter a competition that will find the best compost in the country. Two environmental organisations, Priatelia Zeme-SPZ (Friends of the Earth-SPZ) and the Centre for Environmental Activities, announced the first year of the national contest called Miss Compost in early May, with an enrolment deadline of August 31.
The aim of the competition is to increase awareness about composting as part of a modern lifestyle and to support creativity among people in using biological wastes. The competition is open to anyone who is composting for his or her own needs regardless of the method being used, Martin Valentovič from Friends of the Earth-SPZ told the TASR newswire.
Another goal is to promote composting as part of good gardening practices, added Branislav Moňok from the same organisation. He said that live organisms help degrade household biological wastes into compost, an organic fertilizer ideal for growing plants.
“In this way we can utilise nutritious substances in waste and return them back to the soil from which we took them when growing plants,” said Moňok. “Moreover, by composting we can reduce household waste by almost one-half in a very simple way.”
A jury will shortlist the five best entries from among the nominations and experts and lay representatives will choose the best compost based on its quality at a public event.
