EU against retail chain law, says MP

A SENIOR parliamentarian has warned that a draft law on retail chains, which would require stores to carry 70 per cent Slovak products, could prompt the EU to reopen a deal reached on business competition in entry talks with Slovakia.

František Šebej, the head of the parliamentary European integration committee, has said Brussels regards the bill as against free market principles, and warns that it could retard Slovakia's entry bid.

Slovakia hopes to join the Union in 2004 in a wave including as many as 10 countries, and is now regarded as a front-runner for entry.
