The EU-Slovakia Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) met in Brussels on October 18-19. One of the major topics it dealt with was the decision of the Slovak cabinet to close down the V1 and V2 reactor blocks at the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant between 2006 and 2008. The committee turned down demands from Austrian representatives for an earlier shutdown, and in fact supported the Slovak position. The chairman of the Slovak Parliamentary Committee for Integration, František Šebej, said that the Slovak deputies on the committee unanimously rejected the recommendations of JPC co-chair Hans-Peter Martin, who asked the committee to demand that the Slovak cabinet shut down the reactor sooner. The Slovak deputies argued that Slovakia has invested a lot of money into the safety of the plant.
Austrian Chancellor Viktor Klima announced after the sitting of his cabinet on October 19 that Austria is planing to discuss aid for Slovakia to speed up the shutdown of Jaslovské Bohunice.
