THE SLOVAK Statistics Office has started monitoring the growth of the average prices of the 169 most frequently purchased goods and services. It began checking at the beginning of August; prices will be monitored until the end of June 2009, the SITA newswire wrote.
The main goal of the exercise is to monitor the development of consumer prices in Slovak crowns and euros during the period of mandatory dual pricing. The Statistics Office will regularly publish the results of its monitoring in both currencies, and analyse price changes. The monitoring is intended to prevent unjustified price growth as a result of the euro’s introduction from January 2009.
The Statistics Office monitors consumer prices of individual goods and services across Slovakia in a selected network of outlets used by shoppers.
Slovakia will adopt the European single currency on January 1, 2009.
