EMPLOYEES in Denmark earn the highest wages in Europe, while Moldavian workers earn the lowest, according to the Pay in Europe 2006 analysis prepared by the Federation of European Employers (FedEE). The analysis found that salaries in Slovakia amount to one-tenth of Danish wages.
Other countries whose wages are comparable to Slovakia's include Slovenia, where wages are 21 percent of those in Denmark, Portugal (18 percent), and the Czech Republic (13 percent), the SITA news agency wrote.
In Slovakia, the FedEE assessed only companies with more than 10 employees. In the lowest paid jobs the average hourly wage in Slovakia was Sk51, regardless of the employer's country of origin. In the best-paid positions, such as general directors and heads of boards of directors at large companies, the average hourly wage ranged between Sk270 and Sk593 in the case of Slovak owners. At foreign-owned companies, the average hourly rate in such positions ranged between Sk692 and Sk1,578.
The countries with the highest salaries, apart from Denmark, included Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands.
