First a special levy, now leaflets. Brussels is checking SNS measures again

The European Commission will check again whether Slovakia has violated European rules. Back in April, it issued an injunction requiring the country to suspend the application of a special levy on retailers, introduced by the Slovak National Party (SNS). Retail chains were supposed to pay 2.5 percent of their turnover to the state.

The EC is now looking into whether the obligation that at least one half of products promoted in store leaflets has to be of Slovak origin is at odds with European legislation.

The proposal was, again, drafted by SNS and submitted by its MP, Eva Antošová. The party controls the Agriculture Ministry led by its nominee, Gabriela Matečná. The new requirement came into force this May.
