Persons allowed to drive a motor vehicle in Slovakia are:
- holders of a valid driving licence issued by the authorities of the Slovak Republic
- holders of a valid driving licence issued by a state that
belongs to the European Economic Area (EEA – all EU member states plus Norway, Lichtenstein and Iceland)
- holders of a valid driving licence issued in a state which is a signatory party to the Geneva Convention or a signatory party to the Vienna Convention – only if they are not residents of Slovakia
- holders of a valid international driving licence issued according to the Geneva Convention, not older than one year from its issue date – only if they are not residents of Slovakia
- holders of a valid international driving licence issued according to the Vienna Convention, not older than three years from its issue date - only if they are not residents of
Slovakia and only with a respective valid driving licence
issued by the state that also issued the international driving
license
Holders of a driving licence issued by an EEA state who are permanent or temporary residents in Slovakia can ask to have their licence exchanged for a Slovak one after 185 days from the date of their residency registration.
Holders of a driving licence issued by a country that is a signatory party to the Geneva Convention or to the Vienna Convention, other than an EEA country, who are permanent or temporary residents in Slovakia are required to have their driving licences exchanged for a Slovak one within 60 days, once 185 days have passed since the date of their residency registration.
