THE APPOINTMENT of the current Deputy Finance Minister Vladimír Tvaroška as a new central bank (NBS) vice-governor is dragging on.
President Ivan Gašparovič, who should officialy appoint him, has been reviewing whether Tvaroška meets the legal requirements for the post for two months now, Hospodárske noviny reported.
Tvaroška's nomination by the government for the NBS job was approved by parliament in mid-March, but the president has questioned the length of his professional track record.
The law on the NBS stipulates that the position requires five years of relevant experience, while Tvaroška has been state secretary at the finance ministry for four years.
"The President's Office received the documents from the finance ministry. But the president has been too busy to read them," said President's Office spokesman Marek Trubač.
NBS is concerned about the appointment. "Given the importance of the post of vice-governor in terms of monetary policy, we would like to have it (the post) filled as soon as possible," said central bank spokesman Igor Barát.
The bank, however, could remain without a vice-governor for a while longer, because the president has unlimited time to appoint a candidate.
