The number of customers using Globtel GSM, one of two GSM mobile telephone network operators in Slovakia, was expected to surpass 460,000 by mid-September, said company director Pavol Lančarič at a news conference on September 13.
With that total, Globtel's share of the Slovak mobile market will be 62%, even though the company had only projected 52% for this year. The firm is now expecting a turnover of 5.5 billion crowns and a gross profit of 1.7 billion crowns by the end of this year.
In the same week, Globtel introduced a technological advance known as the SIM toolkit to the Slovak market. It will simplify access to services and important information - weather, commercial data, press agency news services, motorist information, dictionaries, travel - by using SMS message technology.
In late December 1998, Globtel registered over 325,000 customers, three times as much as in 1997 when the mobile operator signed contracts with over 111,000 clients. At the end of the last year, the firm had 102 roaming contracts with operators in 65 countries.
