Last year, the National Highway Company (NDS) did not deliver a single kilometre of highways, something that has happened for the second time in the history of Slovakia; the other year being 2018.

NDS also announced tenders for five important sections of the D1 and D3 highways, mainly in north Slovakia. The focus on these sections is because they are part of the important international TEN-T highway network in the direction of Poland.

Whether they will be actually completed this year is questionable. That is why the words of Transport Minister Jozef Ráž (Smer nominee) that the government has jumpstarted the construction of Slovakia are premature.

However, 2025 could still be one of the strongest years when it comes to highways.

In the article you will read:

  • which sections of the motorways will be completed this year;

  • which roads have been tendered for;

  • why individual sections have been delayed and overpriced;

  • which highways are still only on paper?

D1/D4 intersection to be finished

At the end of 2024, the first branches of this important intersection began to be handed over by the constructor - Polish company Budimex. The connection near Ivanka pri Dunaji in the direction from Jarovce, as well as the exit from Trnava in the direction of Rača in Bratislava have been completed.

Thus, the entire project worth €110 million will move into its final phase this year. In case it is finished, it will be one of the few highway sections completed on time. The intersection is part of the Bratislava bypass, which the state should have built by January 2019 and obviously failed in that regard.
