Highway construction to double in 2006

THE NATIONAL Highway Company (NDS) plans to increase its investment into highway and speedway construction by 61 percent this year to a total of Sk23.3 billion (€610 million).

To achieve this, the NDS intends to use Sk5.9 billion from the state budget, which is Sk1.6 billion more than last year, and double financial support from the EU to Sk3.4 billion. The company also wants to use Sk1.2 billion from the sale of highway stickers and Sk9.2 billion from loans, the SITA news agency wrote.

Forty-four kilometres of road should be constructed this year, of which 17 kilometres should be highways and 27 kilometres speedways. The number of accomplished kilometres will be 23 kilometres higher than in 2005.

The newly constructed roads should include: D1 Vrtižer - Hričovské Podhradie, D3 Hričovské Podhradie - Žilina Strážov, the bypass around Tornaľa at R1, bypass R2 Ožďany, and part of R1 Rudno nad Hronom - Žarnovica.

The majority of investments in 2006 will be spent on parts around Žilina and later on Mengusovce - Jánovce, the highway under the Tatras.
