THE CITIZENS association Internet For Everyone has launched a campaign criticising the lack of Internet access in Slovakia. According to the association, the main reason is the price policy of Slovenské Telekomunikácie (ST), which has a monopoly on fixed-line service. Prices for Internet access have risen by 40 per cent in the last year, said the association.
The association also claimed that ST has been delaying the launch of digital subscriber line (DSL) technology, which could offer a cheaper and faster Internet connection. ST was supposed to launch DSL service in July 2001.
ST's monopoly ends on January 1, 2003, after which time market watchers expect prices for Internet access to come down.
