The number of Slovaks who decide to work abroad for a short time has been growing since the end of 2014. The Statistics Office reported the biggest increases last and also this year, especially to German-speaking countries, Austria and Germany, the TASR newswire reported.
The more stable economic environment in these countries creates more job opportunities that can be filled by Slovak workers, said Ivan Chrappa, head of the Statistics Office’s department of labour and education statistics.
“It is necessary to say that professions they find work in, either in construction or industry, are better paid, so it is the main reason,” Chrappa added, as quoted by TASR.
The number of Slovaks who go to work abroad for less than one year increased for the sixth quarter in a row. During the first three months of 2016 their number rose by 17.8 percent, or 24,100 people, to 159,800 people.
They were mostly employed in construction (43,700) and health care (37,900). Most Slovaks worked in Austria (50,600) and the Czech Republic (37,900). Regarding the regions, most Slovaks come from Prešov Region (40,700), according to the statistics.
