Inflation at historic low

SLOVAKIA’S HARMONISED inflation rate remained at a historic low in February, the SITA newswire wrote. Consumer prices measured by the European Union’s harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) dropped 0.2 percent year-on-year in February, the same decline as in January.

The average annual harmonised inflation rate continued to decline and reached 0.5 percent in the second month of 2010, which is also an all-time low. Consumer prices remained unchanged on a monthly basis, the Slovak Statistics Office reported.

In annual terms, the Statistics Office reported the steepest decline in prices for furniture, household appliances and ordinary home maintenance (4.1 percent).

In contrast, prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased by 7 percent. Prices in the health sector also increased by 5.7 percent and prices in the education sector went up by 4.7 percent.
