VAT rate goes up. The basic VAT rate increases by 1 percentage point on January 1 to 20 percent and the 6-percent VAT rate for foodstuffs sold directly from farms is eliminated.
Constitutional Court delivers two major rulings. The first ruling dealt with a law passed by the previous government that prohibited private health insurers from paying dividends to shareholders – the court found the law to be unconstitutional. The Constitutional Court ruled in the second case that an amendment to Slovakia’s highway construction law that permitted the state to begin building highways on privately-owned land before the land expropriation process was completed was also unconstitutional.
RegioJet announces new rail service. RegioJet, a private subsidiary of a Czech transport firm, unveils plans to provide regular passenger transport on the line between Bratislava and Komárno, beginning in March 2012.
Decommissioning of V1 plant advances. The Nuclear Decommissioning Company (JAVYS) announces that it has completed the removal of all used nuclear fuel from the shutdown V1 nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice. Complete decommissioning of the V1 unit is planned to be wrapped up in 2025. Slovakia agreed to shutter and decommission the plant prior to its accession to the EU.
