JAPANESE companies are showing a growing interest in Slovakia as an investment destination, says the Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro).

According to Jetro's Vienna director Hiroaki Hatano, "the attitude of Japanese companies towards Slovakia has changed. They no longer consider Slovakia a country into which they would invest only after the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland, but as country where they could invest simultaneously with these countries."

At the sixth session of the Slovak-Japan Economic Committee on May 13, Hatano also said that several contacts had been developed between Slovak and Japanese companies during a business mission to Slovakia last October.

Trade between Japan and Slovakia over the last decade has increased from $31 million in 1993 to $216 million in 2001. In 2001 Slovakia exported to Japan goods and services worth $170 million.
