Košice to Vienna IC link to skip Bratislava main station

Move will cut travel time by half an hour.

Travelling from eastern Slovakia to the Austrian capital and back by train will be shorter as of Sunday, December 10, as the intercity train will no longer stop at Bratislava's Main Station.

“These trains will no longer stay for an unreasonably long time at the Main Station in Bratislava,” Slovakia’s national railway carrier ZSSK said, as cited by the SITA newswire.

The InterCity (IC) 44 train from Košice to Vienna should arrive at its final destination 32 minutes earlier, making the journey in 5 hours and 50 minutes. The return journey on the InterCity (IC) 45 train will be slightly shorter at 5 hours and 45 minutes.

Although the train will not stop at the Main Station it will stop at the suburban stations Bratislava-Petržalka, Bratislava-Nové Mesto and Bratislava Predmestie. The intercity train usually takes about 30 minutes to travel from Bratislava-Petržalka, Bratislava-Nové Mesto and Bratislava Predmestie to the Main Station, from where most express trains depart.

Other changes

The change on the Košice-Vienna route is one of a number in the new train schedule valid as of December 10, which has been designed to take into account demands from municipalities and passengers.

“In the new schedule, we meet, for example, requests from students in the east of Slovakia, who will no longer have to change trains on their way home from school,” said former ZSSK general director Roman Koreň.

Changes include adding 12 more trains to the cross-border line from Bratislava to Rajka, Hungary, meaning 22 trains will run on this route daily, and at peak weekday hours will run between Bratislava-Petržalka and Rajka at hourly intervals.

The re-opening of the railway line between Trnovec nad Váhom and Nové Zámky will shorten the journey of of REX Bratislava - Nové Zámky trains by nine minutes.

The number of trains in the Kysuce region, northern Slovakia, between Čadca and Skalité will increase by more than 90 percent. Direct passenger trains on the line will once again run between Skalité and Žilina while the same route will be extended to Liptovský Mikuláš and Martin.

At peak times, trains will run regularly in a 30-minute interval, otherwise every 60 minutes, according to ZSSK officials.
