THE PRESIDENTS of Austria and Slovakia have said that the incomplete A6 highway in Austria is impeding flexible cooperation between Vienna and Bratislava, the news wire TASR wrote.
Austrian President Thomas Klestil admitted on his recent visit to Bratislava that Austria had failed to meet promises to finish the link, and stressed that its early completion was in the interest of his country.
Slovak President Rudolf Schuster said that 2007 was a realistic date for completion; Austria originally promised the highway by the end of 2005.
Klestil confirmed that Vienna intends to build a new rail link to Bratislava, and said it would depend on cooperation between the Bratislava airport and Vienna's Schwechat airport.
"We have a fast track from the centre of Vienna to Schwechat and as soon as we agree on cooperation between the airports, we plan to extend it to Bratislava," he explained.
