THE DRAFT amendment to the law on waste authored by the Environment Ministry will be discussed in parliament in a fast-tracked proceeding, MPs decided on October 16, as reported by the TASR newswire.

The fast-track procedure is due to the fact that Slovakia has so far failed to fulfil its obligation to transpose the European directive concerning waste management, which should have been done by the end of 2010, TASR wrote, adding that Slovakia now faces a daily fine from the European Commission amounting to €17,000.

Adopting the framework directive will result in the change of several legal definitions and the introduction of new definitions, to comply with the directive. The amendment also changes the focus of waste management, putting emphasis on preventing waste production and lowering the unfavourable impact of waste production on the environment and public health.
