Markíza TV gets licence for women’s channel

THE MOST watched TV station in Slovakia, Markíza, is planning to launch a second channel. The Board for Broadcasting and Retransmission granted it a licence for a new channel, TV Doma, in mid-December 2008, Ľuboš Kukliš, the board’s director, told the ČTK newswire.

“They declared that it will focus on women in households,” Kukliš said.

Markíza spokesperson Oľga Dúbravská did not specify when the new station will start broadcasting. Markíza also declined to provide any information about the programming or the costs of launching the new channel.

TV Joj, the first private TV station in Slovakia to have nationwide coverage, launched a second channel in early October 2008. The new channel, Joj Plus, broadcasts older Czech and Slovak films, romantic movies and series. For November it reported a 1.6 percent audience share, making it the fifth most watched TV station in Slovakia.
