New gas power plant opens. A combined-cycle, gas-fired power plant in Malženice in Trnava Region opens on May 1. The plant can produce 3 billion kWh of electricity per year. Construction took 26 months with a total investment of €400 million, the largest power plant built by E.ON in Slovakia in recent years.

Bekaert expands its facility. Bekaert, a global metal and advanced materials company headquartered in Belgium that has been in Slovakia for 10 years, opens an expanded facility in Sládkovičovo that vastly increases its production capacity there. Bekaert’s aggregate investment in Slovakia has been €240 million over the decade.

Slovak media introduce website fees. Several Slovak media websites, including those of the Sme, Hospodárske Noviny, and Pravda dailies, launch a joint project called Piano which costs €2.90 per month or €29 per year for a reader to access certain features on the websites.
