THE FIRST Slovak meat-processing firm has fulfilled all EU requirements that entitle it to export to western Europe after Slovakia's EU entry. To fulfil all EU norms and hygiene standards, the company, Mecom Humenné, invested Sk271 million (€6.45 million), the Slovak daily SME reported on November 22.

Unlike Mecom, the majority of Slovakia's food and meat processing firms are still way behind meeting the EU standards.

SME wrote that only one third of the country's slaughterhouses have fulfilled the norms. Companies can ask the Agriculture Ministry for a transition period to meet the norms. So far, 40 firms have asked for the period.
