Slovakia's trade deficit totaled 27.3 billion Slovak crowns in the first six months of 1999, an improvement of 13.2 billion crowns over the same period last year.
In 1H99, Slovakia exported goods worth 196.7 billion crowns, up 9.3% from 1H98; imports increased 1.6% to 224 billion crowns during this period, the Slovak Statistics Bureau reported on July 23.
Slovakia reported the highest trade deficit with the Russian Federation (20.4 billion crowns), followed by the Czech Republic (4.4 billion crowns) and the United States (4 billion crowns). Slovakia posted the biggest surplus in trade with Austria (4.9 billion crowns), Poland (3.6 billion), and Hungary (3.3 billion).
