The Slovak Cabinet of Prime Minister Dzurinda has commissioned Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Ivan Mikloš to represent the Cabinet on the bank board of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), the country's central bank, while Finance Minister Brigita Schmögnerová was named as his alternate.
The question of whether or not a minister should represent the cabinet on the board and who that representative should be have been subjects of recent controversy. The NBS Act enables a cabinet minister to attend NBS bank board meetings as a non-voting member. Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda said during the appointment announcement March 31 he believes appointing an official to the post should aid in the cooperation between both the government and the central bank.
