As Jaro Šipoš from the Nota Bene magazine told the SITA newswire, this magazine with a circulation of 42,000 copies, which has been on the market for seven years, is bought daily by 1,200 people. Most copies are sold at the beginning of each month. The magazine is written by volunteer journalists who are paid only symbolically, and is distributed through homeless "paperboys", who buy one copy for Sk15 and sell it for Sk30 - the profit belongs to them.
However, they have to buy the magazines in order to sell them, which makes them think in an economic way. Only those who come for the first time are given three copies for free. One seller usually sells 90 copies monthly. "The statistics show that now, substantially more magazine copies are being sold than in the beginning; in 2007, Nota Bene was the sixth most highly sold monthly, according to the ABC," Šipoš said. However, the homeless have to follow the code consisting of 12 points, including - having a license as a seller with a picture and registration number, selling only at a location allotted to him/her by the civic association Proti prúdu (Against the Stream), not being drunk, not begging or asking for more money than the official price of the magazine. The whole Code is listed on the www.notabene.sk website.
