New excise tax on energy

STARTING July 1, an excise tax of two hellers per kilowatt-hour (kWh) will be charged for electricity, coal and natural gas.

Households will be exempt from the new tax, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote.

The tax rate on electricity will be 2 hellers per kWh from July 1 until the end of 2009.

And starting in 2010, the tax on power will rise twice more.

The fuel gas tax rate has been set at 20 hellers per kWh. Gas used to produce heat will be taxed at two hellers per kWh and will also double as of 2010. Producers of power, gas and natural gas that's compressed for use as fuel will be exempt from the tax.

However, coal will be included at the rate of Sk320 per tone
