No new EMU members until 2007

THE HEAD of Germany's central bank, Ernst Welteke, has said countries aiming to enter the European Union should not expect to become members of the European Monetary Union (EMU) before 2007.

Slovakia is among 10 countries expected to be invited to join the EU in 2004. The government has vowed to meet the EMU's tough economic targets three years later.
