The increase was mostly the result of establishing a flight connection to London’s Luton airport which is operated by Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air, the Etrend.sk website reported.
“Despite the significant increase in number of passengers the rise in financial results will not be notable compared to previous years, considering the special, aggressive discounts with which we lure new carriers,” Tomáš Jančuš of Košice airport told the SITA newswire in the end of last year. Similar discounts are used also by Bratislava and several airports abroad.
Also Czech Airlines (ČEZ) and Austrian Airlines operate flights from Košice. The airport is also trying to lure a carrier who would establish connection with Germany, Etrend.sk wrote.
Wizz Air has recently informed that as of September it wants to establish flights to Italian Bergamo and British Doncaster Sheffield where it wants to fly two times a week. It plans to make Košice its 20th base and place there one Airbus plane, according to the website.
The airport also reported an increase in the number of holidaymakers coming to and from 17 seaside destinations by 31 percent to 124,300. The most desired destinations were Antalya in Turkey, Burgas in Bulgaria and Monastir in Tunisia.
Jančuš said that they will add Albanian Tirana into the list of summer charter destinations and plan to launch flights to Croatian Split. The definite list of summer destinations and number of flights is being finalised, Etrend.sk wrote.
