Oncology ward gets convertible beds

Thanks to Daffodil Day, two new beds were acquired for the Oncological Department at the hospital in Bojnice. Daffodil Day is probably the best known way of collecting money and fund-raising in Slovakia. The Liga proti rakovine (League Against Cancer) collected a record sum of Sk20.7 million (€600,000) in donations during last year's Daffodil Day, held in Slovakia on April 13.

The League's executive director, Eva Kováčová, told the SITA newswire on May 3 that the league will distribute about Sk18.7 million of its own programmes and various projects it is funding. League president Eva Siracká said the biggest portion of the donations will be used for cancer prevention and to help cancer patients.

The head nurse of the Oncological Department of Bojnice hospital Viera Kurbelová said: "We are happy and thankful for every crown, as smaller amounts together make a big sum. During the 2007 Daffodil Day, more than Sk20 million were collected in the whole Slovakia." From this amount, the Oncological Department of Bojnice hospital got Sk70,000. "We used the money to buy two convertible beds, which cost together Sk80,000 - we got the rest of the sum from other sponsors' donations." Kurbelová said, adding that one of the beds was placed in the men's ward, and the other in women's ward. This spring, the twelfth Daffodil Day will take place. Kurbelová believes good-hearted people will again contribute to the fund-raising.
