Of this sum almost 44 million were transactions at ATMs, up almost 6 per cent compared with 2000. The number of transactions via POS terminals doubled to 10.7 million transactions last year.

The rise is due to the massive onset of new retail chains that accept card payments as well as the increasing number of issued payment cards.
