THE production of electricity in Slovakia totalled 29 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2009 exceeding consumption by 3 TWh. The drop is ascribed to the economic crisis, which damped production in Slovakia last year, according to the latest issue of a newsletter issued by the Slovak-German Trade and Industry Chamber.
Thus, the consumption was below expectations when the actual production was above the estimate. In August 2009, the Slovak Economy Ministry estimated that Slovakia would lack over 3 TWh of electricity in 2009, as cited by the SITA newswire. The ministry estimated the production at 25.5 TWh, while the country’s energy consumption was estimated at 28.7 TWh.
The biggest influence on power generation in Slovakia has been the decommissioning of the second unit of the V1 nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice at the end of 2008.
