AT THE END of 2005, the national highway company (NDS) announced a public tender to select a general contractor to build the first part of the Mengusovce - Jánovce D1 freeway section, the SITA news agency wrote.

Companies interested in this eight-kilometre long stretch can receive tender dossiers until January 27, 2006, and submit bids by February 15, 2006.

The decisive tender criterion will be the price. The NDS announced in September that construction of this section should cost from Sk4 billion (€106 million) to Sk4.7 billion (€124 million), excluding VAT.

The project will be co-financed from the European Union's Cohesion Fund and the NDS expects its completion by March 2009.

Tender applicants must deposit a financial security of Sk5 million (€132,000), as well as security for the execution of works amounting to 5 percent of contract price.

The NDS also requires applicants' annual turnover to have been at least Sk3.5 billion (€92 million) between 2002 and 2004, or that they have been involved in at least two similar projects with costs of more than Sk1.5 billion (€39 million) launched between 2000 and 2005.

Construction works on the motorway also include building a tunnel, bridges, supporting and retaining walls as well as engineering networks.
