Education in foreign languages is also available in Slovakia at lower levels of schooling. Bilingual study programmes are offered mainly at grammar schools. These programmes include intensive preparation in the foreign language and subjects taught in that language – from natural sciences, to history and humanities.

Education in a minority language is available at public schools for national minorities located mainly in areas with a high concentration of minorities. There are minority schools at all levels of schooling, including kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, and special schools for those with special learning needs or disabilities.
There are kindergartens with Hungarian and Ukrainian as the language of instruction.
In 2006 – 2007 there were 252 primary schools with Hungarian as the language of instruction, seven Ukrainian language schools, one German language school and one Bulgarian language school. In addition, there are a small number of schools that teach in both Slovak and a minority language.
On the secondary level there are schools with Hungarian and Ukrainian as the languages of instruction. There are 19 grammar schools, six specialised secondary schools, eight vocational schools, and three integrated secondary schools teaching in Hungarian. There is one gymnasium with Ukrainian as language of instruction.
Schools for foreigners are mainly located in big cities where the diplomatic community and business expats and their families live. Most of them are multi-nationalities and use English as the language of instruction.
