AN INVESTIGATION into alleged embezzlement of supplies for the recently constructed Branisko tunnel, east Slovakia, has been launched by a special prosecutor for corruption, TV Markíza reported on June 23.
It is probing the fate of around Sk200 million (€4.8 million) paid to an unnamed company by the Slovak Road Administration (SSC) in 2001 and 2002. The sum should have gone to the injured party, the construction company Hydrostav.
Special prosecutor Juraj Bernat said that the company under investigation did not have anything to do with supplies for Branisko, yet the number of its account appeared on a contract between SSC and Hydrostavy.
If charges of embezzlement are brought, they will carry a prison sentence of up to 12 years.
