During the next four years, Slovak Rail (ŽSR) plans to invest 4 billion Slovak crowns annually into the modernization of its main international tracks to allow speeds of 140 kilometers per hour. The modernization project includes new safety systems, as well as track and rolling stock upgrades. When completed, the project should allow track speeds of 140 kilometers per hour, while the stretches from Bratislava-Štúrovo and Bratislava-Nové Mesto nad Váhom will see speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour.
Some bottleneck stretches, such as the Žilina-Čierna nad Tisou, will be widened. ŽSR plans to complete the electrification of the Slovak-Polish stretch between Čadca and Zwadron.
The project was presented at the tenth annual international conference "High-Speed Tracks," which was part of an international week of activities in rail facilities, transport science and research called "Railinform '99," which took place in Žilina between October 4 and 8. More than 800 experts from industrial and construction production, research, development, education, and informatics attended the event.
