Slovak railways will be upgraded by 2010

The international railway corridors' upgrade project in Slovakia calls for 73.2 billion Sk in investment by the year 2010. In the initial phase of the project, a 232-km track connecting Bratislava-Žilina-Čadca (near the Czech Republic and Poland) will be modernized at a cost of 20.5 billion Sk. Most of the funds will come from bank loans. After completion of the first stage, the speed along this section will increase to 160 km/hour, and transportation security and labor productivity will increase. Passenger output will increase from 1,109 passenger-units per km in 1995 to 1,285 by 2010, freight unit output will rise from 2,113 tons-km to 2,772.
