SEI is part of ON Semiconductor, a multinational company that took over the semiconductor production sector from Motorola Inc., which began the development project in Piešťany. ON Semiconductor is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, and employs 14,000 people worldwide. Its global market share in analog, discrete and logical components is 8.7%.

Motorola signed a purchase contract for the production facilities of the bankrupted Tesla Piešťany in September 1998, after failed negotiations on a joint venture back in 1993.
