SLOVAKIA is doing a poor job of managing its rubbish, according to a European Commission ranking of member states that identified major shortcomings in the implementation of an efficient approach towards waste, the TASR newswire reported.
“Failings include poor or non-existent waste prevention policies, a lack of incentives to divert waste from landfills, and inadequate waste infrastructure,” stated a press release from the EC, as quoted by TASR. “Heavy reliance on land filling means that better waste management options such as re-use and recycling are consistently underexploited. The outlook is accordingly poor.”
The EC assessed all 27 member states using 18 criteria in areas such a total waste recycled, infringements of European legislation and pricing of waste disposal.
