Slovakia plans 70% wheat import tariff

The Slovak government will impose a 70% tariff on wheat imports starting on November 2 and lasting for 200 days, the official Slovak news agency TASR reported on October 13. TASR said the government had decided to impose the tariff on all suppliers to settle a previous trade dispute with Hungary. Slovakia had formerly imposed the 70% tariff only on Hungary, citing government subsidies to Hungarian wheat producers. Hungary had described the tariff as a violation of Slovakia's World Trade Organisation commitments. The 70% tariff will, at current prices, amount to 2,540 Sk per tonne.
