AT A recent meeting in Bucharest of the Economic Forum of Businessmen, President Rudolf Schuster and his Romanian counterpart Ion Iliescu discussed ways of improving trade between the two countries.
While pointing out that mutual trade turnover between the countries this year stood at $156 million, Schuster said that this was an improvement, but still unsatisfactory.
Iliescu blamed the low trade on former Warsaw pact countries' orientation to western markets to the neglect of former communist trading partners. "It is the price of transformation we are paying," he said. Both presidents see trade development through small- and medium-sized businesses as well as the automotive and tourism sectors.
In the first half of 2002, Slovak exports to Romania reached Sk3 billion, around half of the total for the full year 2001 while Slovak imports from Romania stood at Sk773 million.
