According to a forecast published by The Economist weekly, Slovakia's per capita GDP in 1997 should be $3,530. In this respect, Slovakia is far behind the region's leader, Slovenia ($9,360) and trails the Czech Republic ($5,320) and Hungary ($4,380) as well, but already is ahead of Poland ($3,450). Without playing down the improved ranking, it seems that Slovakia, as well as her Central European sisters, has its work cut out for it, as Austria's and Switzerland's per capita GDP are still far ahead, at 27,840 and 42,350, respectively.
